"Not Today" is a project that aims to highlight individual violent resistance to chattel slavery.

In each video below I will read one of my favorite stories from a particular slave narrative. I use slave narratives from public archives primarily Documenting the American South and the Works Project Administration interviews. Keep up with new videos by subscribing to the YouTube Channel.

This project has also spawned a data arm. I have collected incidents of violent resistance and archived them at the Texas Data Repository here. The final data will contain roughly 500 individual incidents.

I also signed a contract with Polity Press for a book based on this work, late 2026.
